Alfred Lyndell Berry, 88 years, departed this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
Born in Charlottesville March 15, 1937, he was the son of Ernest Thomas and Virgie Ellen Dinges Berry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elaine Belle Berry Dillehunt, and his beloved wife of 53 years, Joyce May Ward Berry.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons: Christopher (Andrea) of Shipman, and Michael (Tracy) of Scottsville; his twin brother; Ernie Delano (Ella) of Charlottesville, and grandchildren; Justin (Katlin) of Lovingston, Ethan (Joelle) of Lynchburg, Alana and her husband Zachary Hartle of Appomattox and Ava Rose Berry of Shipman.
Alfred was born in Charlottesville, but when he was about five years old his family moved to a farm in Barboursville. There he and his twin brother shared many exciting adventures. One story tells of the 5 year old brothers playing with matches and burning down the barn! And there are many stories of them racing (and wrecking) cars and motorcycles on straight stretches of Route 20 through Barboursville.
Alfred loved the outdoors. He spent many countless hours in the mountains of Buckingham County hunting turkey, deer and bear with his hunting buddies. He never turned down an opportunity for a fishing trip whether it was fishing off a creek bank, on a boat on the lake or a deep-sea charter on the coast. If you wanted someone to go hunting or fishing with you, he was your guy.
From the very beginning Alfred attended the Baptist Church. As a child he attended University Baptist Church of Charlottesville where his parents were charter members. Later, as a young adult he attended Belmont Baptist Church, Northside Baptist and then Grace Baptist Church where he and his wife Joyce were charter members. Alfred served as a deacon, usher, sang in the choir and played on the church’s soft ball team. Any time there was a need everyone knew they could call on “Al” to help them, no questions asked, just a friendly, “I’ll see what I can do.”
Alfred met the love of his life, Joyce May Ward Berry, while he was working at the Michie Company Law Publishing in Charlottesville. Alfred and Joyce were married on July 30, 1960. Alfred loved to sing and he loved to sing “I’ve got A Girl named Bony Moronie” to Joyce. Alfred and Joyce made their home in Albemarle County where they raised two sons. At his retirement, Alfred had worked for more than 30 years at University of Virginia Printing Services.
A private service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026 at Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville with Dr. Todd D. Peck (Pastor of Living Word Christian Fellowship, Arrington, Va) officiating.
Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston (434-263-4907).
