Barbara Ann Murphy, born October 26, 1945, departed her earthly existence on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, with her family lovingly by her side. A woman of grace, warmth, and unforgettable spirit, Barbara lived a life that touched hearts everywhere she went.
She married the love of her life, Russel Wayne Murphy, and together they built a beautiful partnership that spanned 52 years and 10 months. Their union blessed them with one son, Wayne Bernard “Bernie” Murphy, his wife Catrina, and their cherished twin daughters, Nyla and Kyla, all of Richmond, Virginia.
Barbara is also lovingly survived by her brother, Harry Norman Scott of Altamonte Springs, Florida, along with a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and countless friends who became family through the years. Barbara joined Ebenezer Baptist Church at an early age and remained a lifelong member.
Those who knew Barbara will remember her as a kind and gentle soul with just the right streak of wild—a blend that made her unforgettable. She carried a light within her that could brighten even the heaviest day simply by walking into a room. Barbara loved deeply and honestly; she forgave easily, celebrated loudly, and lived with a profound respect for life and the people in it.
She was the person who showed up—especially in your darkest moments. She cried with you, laughed with you, and held space for your burdens as if they were her own. Long before doorbell cameras existed, people knew Barbara had visited by the small pile of rocks she would leave behind—a simple, tender gesture from a time when people showed up just to say hello, or to let you know you were on their mind.
Barbara loved a good party and could be the life of one, yet she also carried a quiet, deeply private side. She protected her inner world, cherishing her family above all else. The void left by her absence will echo profoundly in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have been welcomed into her life.
A woman of extraordinary heart, unwavering loyalty, and gentle strength, Barbara Ann Murphy leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and the simple beauty of showing up for others. Her presence will be missed beyond measure, but her spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched.
Family and friends will gather to remember and celebrate a life well-lived on Saturday, March 21. Her earthly vessel will lie in repose for one hour at Noon and services will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Wells-Sheffield Funeral Home with Pastor Ernie Morse officiating.
Private interment will follow in the Powell Family Cemetery in Shipman.
