Betty Jean Estes Fitzgerald, 85 of Lovingston passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022 in Charlottesville, VA.
She was born October 12, 1936 in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Eugene Edgar Estes and Nannie Katherine Woodie Estes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow "Red" Lee Fitzgerald.
Betty is survived by her three children, Katherine Habel and husband, Billy Lin; Debbie Spivey and husband, Ray; and Michael Fitzgerald and wife, Jennifer; one sister, Janet E. Farrar and one brother Howard "Happy" Estes and wife Patricia; seven grandchildren, Angie Kavounas, Brian Habel, Ray Spivey, IV, Brandon Spivey, Caitlin Blakeslee, Brianna Fitzgerald, and Michael Fitzgerald, II; and seven great-grandchildren, Colby, Owen, Cooper, Ryder, Ben, Bentley and Aliyah.
Betty and Red were married on August 27th, 1955 and danced their way through 59 years of a loving marriage. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and doting grandmother. She especially enjoyed traveling and hosting family gatherings and holidays. During her free time you could find her shopping with her daughters, attending various events of her grandchildren and cooking and canning vegetables from the garden. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist church, where she enjoyed working with friends on the Flower Committee and catering weddings. She will be remembered and cherished for her kind and generous heart, her sweet smile, and the love she showed toward everyone that crossed her path.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston with Pastors Jeremy Humphrey, John Campbell and Greg McCormick officiating. Interment will follow in Mooreland Baptist Church Cemetery, 2255 Taylors Gap Road, North Garden.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Calvary Baptist Church.
Memorial Contributions may be made in her memory to Calvary Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rosewood and care provided by Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Lee Reid.
