Charles Elwood "Chuck" Clayton was born on December 28, 1968, in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and moved with his family to Shipman, Virginia, in 1983. He graduated from Nelson County High School in 1987 and began building a strong work ethic at an early age while working at Food Lion during and after high school. During this time, Chuck also operated his own lawn mowing business, demonstrating the independence and dedication that would define his life.
In the late 1990s, Chuck entered the tire industry, beginning a career that spanned more than 25 years. He worked for several companies in Charlottesville and the surrounding area, most recently with McCarthy Tire, before leaving the industry in early 2025. He took pride in his work and was known for his reliability, honesty, and willingness to help others.
Chuck was a life member of the Lovingston Volunteer Fire Department, where he served in many roles over the years. His commitment to his community and his fellow firefighters reflected his generous spirit and sense of duty.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Margaret, and his mother, Joan. He is survived by his father, Glenn Clayton Sr.; his brother, Glenn Clayton Jr. (wife Louise); his nephews, Christopher and Douglas Clayton; his niece, Katie (husband Colin); and her children, Eric and Nate, all of whom he loved dearly.
The family extends special thanks to Brenda Martin for her compassionate care and support during Chuck's illness.
