Daniel Patrick Stevens, beloved son of Deborah Spencer and the late Charles A. Stevens, passed away at the University of Virginia hospital on August 28, 2024, after a heroic, decades-long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.
Before his illness slowed him down, Daniel spent his life outdoors with his family. He enjoyed fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and joining his cousin for the James River Batteau Festival. Daniel created hand-forged, custom knives of amazing artistry that are both beautiful and useful. He enjoyed reading about ancient history and had an extensive collection of books.
Daniel had opportunities to travel around the United States and beyond. He expressed how these experiences gave him an understanding of other cultures as well as a greater appreciation for the bounty in his own life.
Daniel will be remembered for being a great storyteller and always ready with a funny joke, although in his final days he spent time talking to his mother about the purpose of suffering and the wisdom of great philosophers who spoke words about how suffering shapes our lives and makes us better humans.
Daniel was much loved by his three siblings; Ashley, Jacob and Sierra, his step-father Peter Brown, his nieces and nephews, his late grandparents, many aunts, uncles and cousins, and a host of friends. Daniel’s dog, Pappy, was a great companion and comfort to him.
Daniel’s family would like to thank Dr. Dana Albon and the entire staff of the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at UVA Hospital, as well as the Palliative Care staff: Dr. L. Blackhall, Dr. M. Barclay, and Lee Klempter, NP, for their special care of Daniel over the years and at the time of his passing. In addition, Daniel’s family would like to thank the staff of 3 Central, especially Dr. Clemo and nurse Morgan R., who cared for him during his final days.
Daniel will be buried beside his father in the cemetery at Ridgecrest Baptist Church near Lovingston, Virginia. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Daniel’s memory.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church Cemetery in Lovingston.
The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
