Earl David Matheny
October 21, 1959 – September 12, 2026
Earl David Matheny, a cherished father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Born on October 21, 1959, in Waynesboro, Virginia, He was the son of the late Earl Ray Matheny, Jr., and Ruby Crickenberger Matheny and beloved stepmother, Rosie Matheny.
He was known by family and friends for his generous heart, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor. He had a gift for making people laugh and making everyone feel welcome. No one remained a stranger for long when David was around, and most people left with a smile and a funny story to remember.
After high school, David enlisted in the United States Army. Throughout his life, he remained a hardworking, helpful, and caring man who took great pride in looking after the people he loved.
He took great joy in bringing everyone together. He especially enjoyed fixing things around the “Rock House” and lending a helping hand to anyone in need. Whether he was repairing a piece of equipment, offering a wrench, or helping with a project, David was always ready to step in. He particularly enjoyed working around the shop with his brother Alvin and his nephews, Cameron and Tyler.
Family meant everything to David. He took tremendous pride in his nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces, always looking for the next best thing to share with them or a way to make their lives a little brighter. He also took great pride in helping plan family gatherings and could always be counted on to make holidays special. He helped create memories that his family will treasure for years to come. He loved stoking the woodstove, wrapping gifts for everyone, and making sure the people he loved felt cared for.
His greatest happiness came from being there for others. If someone needed help, he was there without hesitation. He had a seemingly endless supply of jokes to share and his presence brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of togetherness wherever he went.
David is survived by his beloved daughter, Chloe Rose Matheny of Detroit, Michigan; his brothers, Allen Ray Matheny; Alvin Lenahan and his wife, Mary, of Afton; Scott Matheny and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesboro; and Terri Matheny of Waynesboro. He is also survived by his nephews, Cameron Lenahan and his wife, Jenny, and Tyler Lenahan and his wife, Haley, all of Afton, Virginia; his great-nephews and great-nieces, Lane Lenahan, Katie Lenahan, Grant Lenahan, Blake Lenahan, and Sophie Hoodless; numerous cousins; and many dear friends. He also held a special appreciation for his cousin, SheriLynn Matheny Harris, who was always there for him.
He will be remembered for his generous spirit, his willingness to help anyone in need, his quick wit, and the laughter he brought into the lives of others. Above all, he will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and friends. His kindness, warmth, and devotion to those around him leave a lasting legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of the Piedmont of Charlottesville for the excellent care and compassion shown to David throughout his journey. They also wish to thank the Wintergreen Rescue Squad, along with his neighbors, special friends, and family members who offered their support and assistance along the way.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at the “Rock House,” from 1:00 – 4:00…where family and friends will gather to honor David's life and celebrate the incredible mark he left on so many hearts. Reverend Robert Mansfield will officiate service.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, Virginia, or Wintergreen Fire and Rescue, in appreciation of their prompt response and dedicated service.
David's laughter, generosity, and loving spirit will be deeply missed, but the memories he created and the lives he touched will never be forgotten.
