Ella Mae Gibson Johnson

Listen to Obituary

Ella Mae Gibson Johnson, 85, of Nellysford passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026 to be with her Lord and Savior.

She was born on May 13, 1941 a daughter of the late William Austin Gibson and Ella Mae Woodson Gibson Johnson and her step-father, Thomas Elmoe Johnson, Sr.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Charlie I. Johnson, Sr. (C.I.) in 2008; eleven brothers, Louil Gibson, Clarence Gibson, Grant Gibson, Grover Gibson, Sr., Steven Gibson, William A. Gibson, Jr., Hubbard F. Gibson, Lorenzo E. Gibson, Clifton C. Gibson, Robert Junior Gibson, and Thomas Elmo Johnson Jr.; four sisters, Carrie Lee Gibson Woodson, Cora Lee Gibson Fisher, Agnes Virginia Gibson Shifflett, and Mary Ann Gibson; three daughters, Ella Mae Johnson, Anna Katherin Johnson Jones, and Mary Marshall Johnson Niday; and one grandson, Jeremy Wayne Kirt.

Ella was a member of Rockfish Valley Baptist Church in Nellysford. Ella was a devoted mother and grandmother. She worked along side her husband on the farm until his retirement. She was known for her many miles of walking to check on sick neighbors or visiting with friends. I don’t believe there is an inch of 151 that she hasn’t walked. Her footprints will remain for years to come. She was a generous, kind hearted loving woman to all.

She is survived by her two sons, Kauffman I. (Dick) Johnson and Charlie I. Johnson, Jr. both of Roseland; one daughter, Pearl Jane Kirt and her husband, Robert of Afton; one brother, Charles F. (Duck) Johnson and his wife, Shirley of Fishersville; ten grandchildren, Alethea Johnson, Jason Kirt, Amanda Carden, Johnny Jones, Jr., Devin Breighner, Jessica Niday, Emily Niday, Chris Johnson, Jessica Booker, and Jerry Wright; fourteen great-grandchildren, Austin, Jacob, Christian, Caleb, Charity (Gracie), Easton, James, Samantha, Ashleigh, Orlena (Laney), Matthew, Charles (Little Charlie), and Vivian as well as many, many nieces and nephews.

A big thank you to Hospice House of Charlottesville for the loving care and support they showed to the family in this difficult time.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church in Nellysford with Pastor Adam Meredith and Reverend Rob Mansfield officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in the Johnson/Terry Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Kirt, Caleb Word, Scott Kiser, James Johnson, Jamie Carden, and Andy Mansfield.
