Erma Sue Duncan Harris slipped peacefully into Heavenly Eternal Life on 02 Feb 2026. She was surrounded by her family as she would have it no other way.
Erma Sue was born on 18 June 1952 to the late Virgil Thomas Duncan and the late Virginia Johnson Duncan. Her arrival was eagerly greeted by her older Sister, the late Ms. Ann Duncan Snoddy. Those two were quite the pair growing up on Duncan Hollow Loop.
Erma Sue attended Nelson County High School where she met and married the love of her life the late James E. (Jimmy) Harris Jr. Those two couldn’t wait to get married and begin life together. They married on 29 Dec 1969.
Erma Sue graduated from Nelson County High School in 1970. She and Jimmy had their first of 3 children in March of 1971. Later that same year she began working as a clerk at the Nelson County Courthouse in the Treasurer’s office. She loved working at the Courthouse. She held positions in both the Treasurer’s Office as well as the Dept Commissioner of Revenue. Under the early mentorship of the late Mr. J. Marvin Davis and Ms. Jean Payne, she was elected Treasurer of Nelson County where she remained until her retirement on 31 Dec 2011. During her 40 years at the Nelson County Courthouse, she dedicated her life to local politics. She loved living in and being an integral part of Nelson County. Post retirement, she worked with the youth of Nelson County in the Basketball program where she was able to combine her love for children, basketball and Nelson County.
Family was everything to her. She loved her children, especially her grandchildren! They are the true loves of her life. She was an avid fan of UVA Basketball. Her favorite moments were spent with her family and friends. She was a proud member of the “Scottsville Golden Girls”. These ladies meet every Friday for breakfast while reminiscing about old times and laughing about current events. Her “Golden Girl Sister” was also her first cousin Ms. Janet Pace. She and Janet were “sisters” from birth, and they had a very special bond. She was once asked who in this group of women was which “Golden Girl” from the hit TV show? Her answer was classic “Erma Sue”…”I’ll never tell”.
Erma Sue also had another “sister” in Ms. Carol Megginson. Carol and Erma Sue were known as Batman and Robin. They loved to spend time together, study and discuss the Bible, family, friends and old times. The life-long friendship of these two ladies was special to Erma Sue, and she cherished every moment they spent together.
Erma Sue is survived her 3 children, Erma Louise (Jason), Jay (Crystal) and Tiffany (Kallan). She is also survived by her 5 precious grandchildren, Zachary Harris (Johnna) of Massachusetts, GySgt Quentin McKenna (USMC) of North Carolina, TSgt Dylan McKenna (USAF) of Mississippi, Grace Harris and Charlotte Parsley.
