Listen to Obituary

Frederick Dodson Terry, Jr., also known as “Sonny” to family, friends and locals, was born May 14, 1935, and passed away at his home in Lovingston, Virginia, on December 7, 2025.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Dodson Terry, Sr. and Celestia Wright Terry; his brother, Patrick Terry; and his wife, Wanda Terry.

He is survived by his children, Sandra Scattergood (David), Teresa Sale (Richard), and David Terry (Jenny); his grandchildren, Ashley Dunbar (Josh), Heather Rithamel (Brandon), Glenn Sale, and Becky Sale; and his great-grandchildren, Weston Dunbar, Cooper Rithamel, and Waylon Dunbar.

Fred was a graduate of the Hargrave Military Academy and Virginia Tech. During VA Tech civil engineering co-op programs, he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) where he met his future wife, Wanda, in Chattanooga, TN. He also worked on two co-op programs with the Southern Railway and discovered his calling – to become a railroader.

Fred proudly dedicated his career to the Southern Railway and later, after a merger, to the Norfolk Southern Railway. He developed an extensive knowledge of the rail industry. He could easily tell you which rail lines ran through nearly any area of the Southeast and was always eager to share his love of railroads with others. He started off as an assistant track supervisor and rose to the rank of Trainmaster. During his many years as Trainmaster, he always focused on safety, training and education. He often conducted Operating Rules classes for the railroad crews as well as for fellow Officers.

Outside of work, he enjoyed tending the large garden on his family property, reading books on American history, hunting, and fishing.

In retirement, Fred remained active in his community and enjoyed participating in organizations such as the Lions Club, Ruritan Club, and Railway Alumni Clubs. He maintained an inquisitive spirit throughout his life and had an insatiable desire to learn, along with a remarkable ability to remember even the smallest details. His quick wit, endless stories, and one-of-a-kind personality are fondly remembered and deeply missed.

The family will receive friends on July 6, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m.

A private interment will follow the service.
