Homer Gowan Ponton passed away Friday, June 26,2026 at his home in Lovingston.
Born in Roseland, July 30, 1936 he was a son of the late Stephen Withers Ponton and Ruby Gowan Ponton. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister Mildred Hubbard and five brothers, Leslie “Buck”, Albert “Bunky”, Lawrence, Julian and Miller Ponton.
Homer was owner of Ponton’s Amoco for several years. He later delivered gas and oil for Harvey’s Oil and was then a mechanic at Nelson Motors, all the while being a part-time Justice of the Peace.
In 1975 he became a full time Magistrate for the 24th Judicial District for 32 years, retiring in 2007. All this time he loved to mow lawns for people because “the mowers didn’t talk back to me and it made God’s creation look good”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Frances Lunsford Ponton; his children, Steve Ponton (Carolyn), Keith Ponton (Judy), Cindy Pannell (J.R.) Monica Campbell (Alton, Jr.); seven grandchildren, Ruth Ann, Natalie, Brandon, Becky, Lauren, Ashley and Matthew; fourteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Shirley White and three brothers, Leo (Frances), Douglas (Imogene) and Alvin Ponton.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 2pm at the Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston with Pastors Tyler Lucas and John Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Jonesboro Cemetery in Roseland.
A visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 7pm at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial contributions be made to the Jonesboro Cemetery Fund, 59 Stringfellow Lane, Arrington, VA 22922; Calvary Baptist Church, PO Box 264, Lovingston, VA 22949 or the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Place, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Piedmont for the love and support given to Homer and the family during the last days of his life.
