Lawrence "Larry" Edward Oliver

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Lawrence "Larry" Edward Oliver, who departed this life peacefully at 63 years old. He passed away at UVA Medical Center after a courageous battle with metastatic lung cancer on May 24, 2025. His final days were spent surrounded by his family.

He was born April 30, 1962 in Fairfax, Va. A little later in his childhood his family would move to Nelson County. That is where Larry would spend the remainder of his life. There was no place like Shipman in Larry's opinion.

He was employed by Nelson County. He worked at the Shipman Collection site. He was one of the first employees when the dumpster site opened and retired just before his cancer diagnosis. He loved his job and all the people he met and got to know at the dump.

Most people knew him as Larry but there were two names that he loved being called the most Dad and Granddaddy. He loved and adored his Son and Grandsons. Family truly meant everything to Larry.

He was preceded in death by his father, Winston Roosevelt Oliver and a niece, Ann Marie Vernon along with numerous other family members.

He is survived by his son, Matthew Oliver (Ashley) and two grandsons, Matthew Oliver Jr. and Mason Oliver all of Shipman. His mother, Joy Ann Oliver of Shipman; brothers, Vernon Oliver (Linda) of Westerly RI and Timothy Oliver of Shipman; sister, Joy Fitzgerald (Ray) of Shipman; two nephews that he helped raise and loved as his own Daniel Oliver (Kaitlyn) of Faber and David Oliver (Brittany) of Christiansburg; a great niece, Brinkley Oliver of Faber; uncle and hunting buddy Troy "Rick" McGinnis of North Carolina; Ex Wife and the love of his life Linda Allen of Shipman. He leaves behind many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews that he loved dearly as well as three friends that were like family Chris Napier, Terry Warren, and Joe Davis

Our family would like to thank Nelson County EMS, UVA Emily Couric Cancer Center, UVA ER Staff, UVA Neurology ICU and UVA Neurology for all of the excellent care he received through his illness. Also, a big Thank you to Legacy Hospice for all the effort they made to try to get us home.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston (434-263-4097).
