Mary Shirley Elizabeth Hill (affectionately known as Shirley) was born on May 13, 1936 in Tye River, Virginia to Ruben and Lucy Hill.
She passed away on April 13, 2026.
Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Lucy Hill; Children, Bernice Board, William Taylor, Jr., and Vennie Hill; Grandson, Tymark Wells; Great-grandson, Avion Evans and Siblings, Calvin Hill, George Hill, Katherine Brown, and Lillian Gore.
Shirley grew up in Tye River, Virginia and attended Nelson County Public Schools.
Shirley later relocated to Washington, DC to pursue a career as a homemaker. In doing so, she learned that she had a passion for childcare, so she became a childcare provider.
Shirley had a nurturing spirit. She would open her home and kitchen to just about anyone, because of that; most people that knew her called her ma or grandma.
She was a woman of God; kind and caring, but there was a time when Shirley was known as Tank. Tank didn’t take no mess!
On any given day you could find Shirley cooking and cleaning while singing her favorite hymns. Her absolute favorite songs were sung by Shirley Caesar.
Shirley loved her family, but nothing compared to the love she had for her children and grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Lena. Six grandchildren, Dawnyelle (Samuel), India (John), Darell, Roseanne, Egypt (Sharita), and Faith; fifteen great-grandchildren, Sincere, Donovan, Nina, Damari, Morgan, Zoey, Aiden, Yasin, Ameera, Taylor, Talil, Jayvion, Savion, Kali, and Kaison; five siblings, Barbara Owens, Gloria Tabb, Norman Hill, Douglas Hill, Nannie Atkins and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and family friends.
Her spirit will live on in every shared story, every echo of laughter, and every act of love inspired by her example. We will forever carry her in our hearts.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, 828 Front Street, Lovingston VA 22949.
