Mildred Gorham Adcock Houchens, 87, of Schuyler, VA passed away peacefully, at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital surrounded by her loving family on December 31, 2025.
Born July 2, 1938, in Franconia, VA, she was the oldest of four children of the late Thomas Gorham and Estelle Beavers Gorham.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings Charles “Roy” Gorham and Shirley Gorham; nephews Frankie Adcock Jr., Thomas Gorham III, and William Sanford III; nieces Tami Gorham and Angel Smith.
Mildred, the matriarch to her family of five generations, not only gained her well-deserved wings but also earned her very own special star which she often spoke of gaining one day. With eyes that seen the best in everyone and a heart that forgave the worst, she loved her family fiercely.
She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Roger Houchens; three children, Edward Adcock Jr. (Jen), Dennis Adcock, and Beatrice Adcock (Tommy); a brother, Thomas Gorham Jr.; four grandchildren, Alice Ragland (Winford), Jason Gorham, Justin Gorham, and William Brown; five great grandchildren, Austin Ragland (Kristen), Allen Ragland (Alexis), Lillie Tyree, Brynlee Brown, and Everly Brown; six great-great grandchildren, Easton, Trenton, Brooks, Rooster, Lane, and Blakely; stepchildren, Roger Houchens Jr. and Pearl Houchens and family; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. January 6, 2026 at Wells Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston, VA with Pastor Ray Walker officiating.
Interment will follow in Alberene Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the time of service.
