Randolph Everett "RE" Simpson, 83, a proud native of Nelson County, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2026.
RE enjoyed a successful career at the University of Virginia, where he worked as an electrical supervisor. It was at UVA that he met his wife, June. They shared 36 years of marriage and enjoyed many happy times and activities together.
After retiring early, RE embraced the things he loved most: hunting, fishing, and playing rhythm guitar in bluegrass bands. His music inspired many younger musicians and left a lasting impression on those who heard him play. RE enjoyed wonderful trips and outings with the Model A Club and created many wonderful memories. He was also an avid motorcycle rider until the last few years of his life. RE had a special place in his heart for animals, especially his larger-than-life cat, LeRoy.
RE was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, June Simpson.
He is survived by his stepson, Dr. Tom Akers II, and his wife, Kathy, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; grandchildren Nathanial Akers of Alaska and Kristen Akers of North Carolina; and his stepdaughter, Donna Akers-Casanave, and her husband, Paul, of Williamsburg, Virginia. He is also survived by grandchildren Angela Casanave Stilwell and her husband, Zack; Karly Casanave-Phillips and her husband, Jonny; and Paul Joseph "PJ" Casanave; as well as great-grandchildren Finnley, Reagan, and Mighty Jack, all who reside in Virginia. Randolph was blessed to have a devoted care giver, Charlene Shepherd.
RE was a faithful member of the Central Baptist Church in Waynesboro, VA. He will be missed by his family, friends and his loving cat, LeRoy.
A funeral service will be held 3pm, Friday, October 23, 2026 at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with Pastor Ely Guzman Officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before time of service.
Arrangements by the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston, (434-263-4097).
