Sammy Mawyer
Heaven just got a little louder and a lot funnier. Samuel Otis “Sammy” Mawyer II, of Lovingston, VA, passed away on July 9, 2026.
A lifelong resident of Nelson County, he was born July 29, 1957, to the late Samuel O. and Susie Hughes Mawyer.
Sammy enjoyed fixing things and helping others. He had a love for all things fast and loud. He ran Sam’s Garage in Faber and then worked as a mechanic at Hall’s Auto Body in Charlottesville for over 25 years. In his spare time, he could be found watching racing or target shooting. He also had fun setting off fireworks, and could be counted on for July 4th, New Years Eve, and any other holiday he felt would be enhanced by loud explosions in the sky.
Sammy’s greatest excitement was when someone would ask him for help with something, whether it was fixing a piece of equipment or just holding a ladder. A former member of the Faber Volunteer Rescue Squad, he could never pass someone in need without stopping to help. No one stayed a stranger for long when Sammy was around, and they usually left laughing. He will be remembered for his quick wit and his generous heart.
Most of all, Sammy loved spending time with his family and friends. He could always be counted on to bring joy and laughter to any gathering, and family get-togethers will be a little quieter and less bright without his presence.
Sammy was preceded in death by both parents and his sister Sandra Scourby.
Left behind to miss him are his wife of 26 years, Angie, daughter, Alyssa (Jeremy) Carr, and adored grandson, Lucas Carr. He is also survived by his sisters, Ella (Frank) Wood and Carolyn Tinder, his brother, Jeff (Kenda) Mawyer, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday July 25, 2026 at Adial Baptist Church, 1090 Adial Road, Faber, VA. Pastors Michael Bond and Michael Hevener will be officiating.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. There will be a gathering in the fellowship hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Faber Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Arrangements by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston (434-263-4097).
