William Joseph "Butch" Fortune

William Joseph Fortune, fondly known as “Butch” of Freshwater Cove, Lovingston, completed his earthly journey on October 12, 2024 after many years of struggling with heart and kidney disease and diabetes.

Born on October 22, 1943, he was the son of Clenn and Jessie Mae Gordon Fortune who predeceased him.

Now he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 32 years, “Betty” Mays Fortune, his son, Kevin M. Fortune (wife Amy and son Connor), his daughter, Meghan F. Mozingo (husband Mike and daughters Amelia and Caroline), his stepson, Wayne Carter (wife Carmen and son Henry). Also, sisters Becky Wiseman (husband Wayne Straight), Jane Fortune (husband Steve Mays), and Nancy Neighbors (husband David), nieces, Angela Baylis (husband Matt and sons Thomas and Alex), Amy Neighbors, former wife and mother of his children, Geri Fortune, and many beloved cousins, family members and friends.

“Butch” began his career in communications in 1963 and worked with several telecom companies. He served his country in the U.S. Army from June, 1965 through June, 1967, including a 17-month tour in Heidelberg, Germany as a helicopter mechanic.

After retirement in 2006 he became a home renovation expert, gardener, and lawn care specialist. He loved spending time on his tractor and other equipment. He had two ways of fixing things – the book way and his way. His always worked.

“Butch” made many friends at Woodland Baptist Church and for the past 17 years at Clifford Baptist Church. He served there until his health prevented it, and continued to attend faithfully. He loved the pastors and people there.

How do you describe this “gentle giant” in a few words? It’s impossible. He loved God, family, and friends, in that order. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

He requested that thanks be expressed to all who helped him and Betty during his last physical challenges.

“Butch’s” memorial service will be held at Clifford Baptist Church, 635 Fletchers Level Road, Amherst, Virginia at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald, Rev. Jeffrey Campbell, and Rev. Clyde Mawyer, Jr. will conduct the service.

Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 16 of Lynchburg.

Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A dessert fellowship in the church social hall will follow the service.

Arrangements are being handled by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, Virginia (434-263-4097).
